Kolkata police arrest Councillor's son over 34 lakh real estate extortion

In a major development in Kolkata, Kasba Police arrested Samrat Mukhopadhyay, the son of Ward 67 TMC Councillor Bijanlal Mukhopadhyay, over extortion allegations. The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged on July 18 by a local promoter, who alleged that the accused intimidated him and extorted approximately ₹34 lakh. Upon receiving the complaint, law enforcement launched a preliminary investigation into the matter.

Following initial verification of the promoter's claims, Kasba Police took Mukhopadhyay into custody on Monday. Authorities have registered a case against him under multiple legal sections, including extortion and criminal intimidation. Additionally, charges under the Arms Act have been added to the case as part of the formal investigation by Kolkata Police.

The arrest comes amidst strict stance against corruption and extortion in West Bengal, where state authorities have reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against unlawful activities. Over recent times, police have taken action against several local leaders and public figures facing similar charges. Mukhopadhyay remains in police custody as legal proceedings and further investigation continue.
